Sharjah International Airport to Deira

Deira, Dubai's old trading district on the creek, is often quicker to reach from Sharjah International than people expect: it lies just across the border, on the Sharjah side of Dubai.

Across the border into Dubai

The chauffeur crosses into Dubai either on Al Ittihad Road, past the Al Mamzar Salik gates, or on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Airport Road, which has no Salik gate. At quiet times Deira is around twenty-five minutes from the terminal. On a weekday morning, with Sharjah's commuters heading into Dubai, allow up to fifty.

Because the trip ends in another emirate, the cross-emirate surcharge is inside the fixed fare you see before booking.

Souks, the creek and Al Rigga

Deira's hotels cluster around Al Rigga and Port Saeed, along the Deira Corniche and beside the creek near the Gold and Spice Souks. The souk lanes are for walking, so the chauffeur stops at the closest road. For a hotel or an office in Al Rigga, choose the exact building, as the streets are dense and one-way in places.

Why fly into SHJ for Deira

Air Arabia and many other airlines fly into Sharjah, and for Deira it can be as convenient as Dubai International, with a quieter terminal. For your flight home, a pickup in Deira heading to SHJ runs against the morning traffic but with it in the evening, so plan the return time accordingly.

Markets beyond the Gold Souk

Deira's trading life goes well beyond the Gold and Spice Souks. The Waterfront Market near the Deira Corniche sells fresh fish and produce, and Naif Souk and the streets around Al Murar are full of wholesale and household shops. For any of them, choose the market by name, as the parking areas and entrances are on different streets.

SHJ to Deira: your questions

How long does the transfer take from SHJ to Deira?
About 30 kilometres, usually 25 to 50 minutes depending on traffic and the time you land.
Is Deira closer to SHJ or DXB?
DXB is closer by distance, but Deira is only about 26 kilometres from SHJ, and the drive can be quick outside the rush hours.
Will I pay Salik from SHJ to Deira?
Only if the route uses Al Ittihad Road through the Al Mamzar gates; the airport road route has none. Any crossing is at cost on your receipt.
Can I be dropped at the Gold Souk?
At the nearest road to it. The souk itself is a walking area.
Can I get to Deira City Centre from SHJ?
Yes. It is on the southern edge of Deira near Al Garhoud, so allow a few minutes more than for Al Rigga. Choose the mall entrance in the address search.
Where will my driver meet me at Sharjah International Airport?
Without Meet & Greet: the parking the airport designates for pre-booked cars, marked across the airport; it can move, so follow the markings. With Meet & Greet: inside the arrivals hall, with a name board.
