Sharjah International Airport to Bur Dubai
Bur Dubai, the old quarter on the western bank of Dubai Creek, is about thirty kilometres from Sharjah International, across the water from Deira, so the transfer crosses the emirate border and the creek.

Over the border, then over the creek
The chauffeur comes into Dubai either on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Airport Road, a way in with no Salik gate, or on Al Ittihad Road past the Al Mamzar gates. To reach the western bank the car then crosses the creek, usually on Al Garhoud Bridge or Al Maktoum Bridge, and each of those bridges has a Salik gate. Tolls are passed through at cost and shown on your receipt, apart from the fixed fare.
At quiet times you can be in Bur Dubai in about twenty-five minutes. On a weekday morning, with Sharjah's commuters on the same roads and the creek bridges at their busiest, it can take fifty.

Al Fahidi, the souks and Al Seef
Bur Dubai faces Deira across the creek. At its centre is the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, with its wind-tower houses, beside the textile souk and the abra stations where boats cross to the Deira side. These lanes are mostly for walking, so the car stops at the nearest open road. Al Seef, the creekside promenade next to Al Fahidi, has drop-off points of its own and is often the simplest place to be set down.
Away from the water, Al Mankhool and Al Raffa are packed with apartment buildings and mid-size hotels on similar streets, with Al Karama and Oud Metha beside them. Pick the exact building in the address search; a street name alone is rarely enough here.
Compared with Deira
Deira is on the Sharjah side of the creek, about twenty-six kilometres from SHJ, so Bur Dubai adds the crossing and a few more kilometres. Outside the rush hours that costs only a few minutes; at peak times the bridges can add a good deal more. If you are staying near the creek and want to see the Deira souks, the abra is the easy way over on foot once your bags are at the hotel.

The drive back to Sharjah
Going back, the drive runs against the traffic in the morning and with it in the evening, when the roads towards Sharjah are at their heaviest and the bridges are slow as well. Sharjah Airport asks passengers to arrive three hours before departure, so for an evening flight leave well ahead, and put your flight number on the booking so it can tell you if the pickup is too late.
