The short answer

Travelling light and alone to somewhere close, a taxi from the rank is simple. If anything about your arrival is complicated, such as children, luggage, a late flight, a long drive or a guest to look after, a pre-booked chauffeur removes the uncertainty and settles the fare before you fly.

Two ways to leave the airport by car

When you land at Dubai International (DXB), there are two ways to leave by car. You can walk out to the taxi rank and take the next licensed taxi, or you can have a chauffeur booked before you fly, waiting for your flight. Both are legitimate and both will get you to your hotel. The difference is in what is settled in advance: the car, the fare, the pickup time and the help you get with your luggage. This guide explains how each works, so you can decide before you board rather than in the arrivals hall at the end of a long flight. If you are going to a specific district, our guides to DXB to Downtown Dubai and DXB to Dubai Marina go into the routes.

How the airport taxi works

Licensed taxis wait at official ranks outside arrivals at each terminal, and staff direct passengers to the next car. You pay what the meter shows at the end of the trip, and taxis from the airport start at a higher flag-down fare than taxis hailed in the street. Salik tolls on the way are added. The fare depends on the distance and the time spent in traffic, so the same trip can cost noticeably more at the evening peak. You can’t choose the size of the car in advance, and you will need your own child seat for young children. At busy times, when several long-haul flights land together, the queue can be long. For a short trip, with light luggage, outside the rush hours, the taxi rank is quick and needs no planning.

How a pre-booked chauffeur works

A pre-booked chauffeur is arranged before you travel. You give your flight number, and the chauffeur follows the flight and times the pickup from its actual arrival, with free waiting time to get through passport control and baggage reclaim. With Meet & Greet, added when you book where it is offered, the chauffeur waits inside the arrivals hall with a name board, helps with your bags and opens the door. You choose the class of car from those with a car that takes your party and luggage, add a child seat if you need one, and see one fixed fare before you book. With drivoo, every chauffeur drives for a licensed limousine company, and drivoo checks the fleet’s permits and the chauffeur’s documents before dispatch.

What you pay for

A taxi fare is worked out at the end: the airport flag-down, the distance, the time in traffic and the tolls. A chauffeur’s fare is worked out before you book: one fixed fare, with Salik and parking passed through at cost and itemised on your receipt, and any extras you chose, such as Meet & Greet or a child seat. For a short ride with light luggage, a taxi often costs less. For a long ride, a family that would need two taxis, a trip to another emirate, or an arrival at the evening peak, compare the quote with what the meter is likely to show. The value of a chauffeur is also in what is not on the bill: the queue you skip, the car that fits your bags and the receipt your company accepts.

When a taxi makes sense

Take a taxi if you travel alone or as a couple with hand luggage, your destination is close to the airport, such as Deira, Al Garhoud or Downtown, and you land outside the busy evening hours. A taxi also suits a spontaneous change of plan, when you didn’t know your destination until you landed. Keep a little time in hand: the queue at the rank moves quickly most of the day but can stretch when several wide-body aircraft arrive together.

When a pre-booked chauffeur makes sense

Book a chauffeur if you travel with children and need a child seat; if you have several large bags or a group that would not fit one taxi; if you land late at night or very early; if you are going further, to Dubai Marina, the Palm, or another emirate such as Sharjah or Abu Dhabi; if you are visiting for business and need to arrive on time with a proper receipt; or if you are meeting a guest and want someone waiting for them by name. It also suits travellers with limited mobility or older relatives, because the chauffeur helps with the bags from the arrivals hall to the car. Companies that book often can open a business account and see every ride in one place.

Going on to another emirate

Many travellers who land at DXB are not staying in Dubai at all. A taxi from the rank can take you to Sharjah, Ajman or Abu Dhabi on the meter, but over a long distance the fare depends on every minute of traffic, and the car is whatever comes next in the queue. A chauffeur’s fare for the same trip is fixed before you book, with the cross-emirate surcharge included, and the car is chosen for your party and bags. For a long drive after a long flight, that difference matters. See our intercity routes for the journey times between the emirates, and the Sharjah Airport to Dubai guide if you are comparing airports.

Booking a chauffeur: a short checklist

Before you fly, have your flight number, the full address or hotel name, the number of passengers and every bag, including strollers and golf bags. Add a child seat for each young child, and Meet & Greet if you want to be met inside. Put any detail your chauffeur should know in the note, such as a second phone number or a building entrance. After booking you get a message when your chauffeur is assigned, with a link to follow the car. Cancellation is free up to a set time before pickup, shown when you book, so you can book as soon as your flight is confirmed. Read our guide to DXB meeting points by terminal to know where to go when you land.
