The short answer

Dubai Marina is at the far end of the city from Dubai International (DXB): roughly 35 to 40 kilometres, mostly on Sheikh Zayed Road, and usually 30 to 45 minutes outside the rush hours, or more than an hour at the peaks. This guide compares a pre-booked chauffeur, a taxi, and the metro and tram.

The Marina is across the city from the airport

Dubai Marina, with Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR), Bluewaters and the Palm Jumeirah next door, is at the opposite end of Dubai from Dubai International Airport (DXB). The drive is roughly 35 to 40 kilometres, most of it on Sheikh Zayed Road, and usually takes 30 to 45 minutes outside the rush hours. At the morning and evening peaks, or when an accident slows Sheikh Zayed Road, it can take more than an hour. That distance shapes the choice: the options that work well for Deira or Downtown become slower or less comfortable over the length of the city, especially after a long flight, with luggage, or late at night. If you are flying into Al Maktoum International (DWC) instead, the Marina is closer, and the roads from Dubai South are usually quieter.

The route and the Salik gates

Most drivers cross Dubai Creek and join Sheikh Zayed Road, the city’s main artery, and follow it past Downtown, Al Barsha and Mall of the Emirates to the Marina interchanges. Sheikh Zayed Road has several Salik toll gates, including Al Safa and Al Barsha, and the crossing of the creek may add another. The RTA charges one toll when you pass both Al Safa gates in the same direction within an hour. Al Khail Road, which runs parallel inland, is the usual alternative when Sheikh Zayed Road is jammed, and it has its own Salik gate at the Business Bay Crossing. Salik tolls vary with the time of day. In a taxi they are added to the fare; with a drivoo chauffeur they pass through at cost, with no markup, each crossing itemised on your receipt.

A pre-booked chauffeur

A chauffeur booked ahead takes the uncertainty out of the long drive. Your flight is tracked, the pickup is timed from its actual arrival, and you have free waiting time to clear immigration and collect your bags. With Meet & Greet, added when you book where it is offered, your chauffeur waits inside the arrivals hall with a name board. The fare is fixed before you book, so time spent in traffic on Sheikh Zayed Road doesn’t move a meter. You choose the class from the cars that take your party and luggage, add a child seat if you need one, and the chauffeur takes you to the door of your tower, hotel or villa. You can book a transfer from DXB to Dubai Marina on our website, or see DXB to JBR and DXB to Palm Jumeirah.

A taxi from the airport

Taxis wait at the official ranks outside arrivals at every terminal. The meter starts at the airport’s higher flag-down fare and runs for the whole trip, including any time in traffic, and Salik is added. Over the length of the city, that makes the fare depend heavily on the time of day. The taxi rank needs no planning and suits a solo traveller with light luggage, but you can’t choose a larger car in advance, there may be a queue when several flights land together, and you will need to bring and fit your own child seat if you travel with young children.

The metro and the tram

The Red Line of the Dubai Metro runs from Terminals 1 and 3 all the way to the Marina, and the Dubai Tram links with the Red Line at two stations near the Marina and JBR. It is the cheapest way to make the trip and avoids the traffic, but it is a long ride across the whole city, often followed by a walk or a change to the tram. The RTA allows two pieces of luggage per passenger, one large and one small, and staff can turn away oversized bags. Terminal 2 has no metro station. For a light traveller arriving in the daytime it can work well; with a family, heavy cases or a late arrival, check the timetable and luggage rules first.

Arriving in the Marina

The Marina is a dense district of towers set around a canal, with one-way streets and shared drop-off lanes, and JBR’s beachfront road is slow on weekend evenings. Give the exact name of your tower or hotel when you book, not just “Dubai Marina”, and add a note if the entrance is on a side street or a lower level. Bluewaters, reached by its own bridge from JBR, and the Palm Jumeirah’s hotels each have their own approach roads, so your chauffeur needs the precise address to choose the right one. If you are staying in a short-let apartment, ask your host which entrance to use and put it in the note for your chauffeur.

Late arrivals, families and groups

Many long-haul flights land in Dubai late at night or in the early morning. A pre-booked car means you walk out to a chauffeur who knows where you are going, instead of starting a long journey at the end of a queue. Families should add a child seat when they book: UAE traffic rules require one for children under four, and children aged ten or under, or shorter than 145 centimetres, can’t sit in the front. Count every bag, including strollers and golf bags, so the car offered has room. Groups and families with many cases can choose drivoo Van when one fits, which keeps everyone in one car instead of splitting into two taxis.

Choosing between them

For the Marina, distance is the deciding factor. The metro suits light travellers in the daytime who don’t mind a long ride and a change. The taxi rank suits a solo traveller who lands outside the rush hours. A pre-booked chauffeur suits almost everyone else: families, groups, business travellers with a schedule, anyone with heavy luggage or a late arrival, and anyone who wants to know the fare before they fly. Whichever you choose, allow extra time at the evening peak on Sheikh Zayed Road. Before you land, read our guide to DXB meeting points by terminal, and our guide to Salik tolls explains how tolls appear on your receipt.
