How to Get from Dubai Airport (DXB) to Downtown Dubai

The short answer

Downtown Dubai is roughly 15 kilometres from Dubai International (DXB): usually 15 to 25 minutes by car, and 30 to 45 minutes at the morning and evening peaks. A pre-booked chauffeur, a taxi from the rank and the Dubai Metro all get you there; this guide compares them for luggage, families and late arrivals.

Downtown Dubai is close to the airport

Downtown Dubai, home to the Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall and Dubai Opera, is one of the closest districts to Dubai International Airport (DXB). From the terminals to the hotels around the Burj Khalifa it is roughly 15 kilometres, which usually takes 15 to 25 minutes by car outside the rush hours and 30 to 45 minutes at the morning and evening peaks. Business Bay and DIFC, the business districts on either side of Downtown, are about the same distance. Most international flights arrive at Terminal 1 or Terminal 3, and Terminal 2 serves mainly regional flights. Whichever terminal you land at, you have three realistic ways into town: a pre-booked chauffeur, a taxi from the rank, or the Dubai Metro. Each suits a different kind of traveller, and the right choice depends on your luggage, the time you land and how much you want to think about the journey after a long flight.

A pre-booked chauffeur

With a pre-booked chauffeur, the car is arranged before you fly. You enter your flight number when you book, and the chauffeur follows the flight and times the pickup from its actual arrival, so a delay or an early landing doesn’t leave you stranded. You get free waiting time after landing to clear passport control and collect your bags. If you add Meet & Greet when you book, where it is offered, your chauffeur waits inside the arrivals hall with a name board and helps with your luggage. The fare is fixed before you book, and you choose the class from the cars that take your party and bags, so a family with large cases is not squeezed into a sedan. The chauffeur drives you to the door of your hotel or residence tower. You can book a transfer from DXB to Downtown Dubai in a few steps on our website.

A taxi from the rank

Licensed taxis wait at the official ranks outside arrivals at each terminal. You join the queue, take the next car and pay what the meter shows at the end, plus any Salik tolls on the way. Taxis from the airport start with a higher flag-down fare than a taxi hailed in the street, so a short ride into Downtown still costs more than the distance suggests. At busy times, when several long-haul flights land together, the queue can take a while, and you can’t choose the size of the car in advance, which matters if you travel with a lot of luggage or a child who needs a seat. For a solo traveller with a carry-on bag, the taxi rank is simple and needs no planning.

The Dubai Metro

The Red Line of the Dubai Metro has stations at Terminal 1 and Terminal 3; Terminal 2 has no station of its own. For Downtown, ride to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station, which is linked to the mall by a long covered walkway, and take a short taxi ride or walk on to your hotel. The metro is the cheapest option and avoids road traffic, but the RTA limits luggage to two pieces per passenger, one large and one small, and staff can refuse bags that are too big. It works well for light travellers arriving in the daytime. With a family, heavy cases or a late-night arrival, check the RTA’s timetable and luggage rules before you rely on it.

The route and Salik tolls

By road, the usual routes from the airport to Downtown cross Dubai Creek on Al Garhoud Bridge or run along Al Khail Road past the Business Bay Crossing, and both have Salik toll gates. Which one your driver takes depends on the terminal and the traffic at the time. Salik tolls vary with the time of day. In a taxi, tolls are added to the meter; with a drivoo chauffeur, Salik passes through at cost, with no markup, and each crossing is itemised on your receipt, while your quote shows an estimate for the route. Either way, the journey is short enough that the time of day matters more than the road: a trip that takes 20 minutes mid-morning can take twice as long at the evening peak.

Arriving at Downtown hotels and residences

Downtown is built around Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard, a loop lined with hotels, serviced apartments and residence towers, many with their own drop-off lanes. Give the full name of your hotel or tower when you book, rather than “Downtown” or “near Dubai Mall”, so your chauffeur goes straight to the right entrance. The streets around Dubai Mall are busiest on weekend evenings, and on big nights such as New Year’s Eve, roads around the Burj Khalifa close for hours, so check your hotel’s advice and allow plenty of time. If you are heading to a meeting in Business Bay or DIFC first, you can set that address as the destination and continue to your hotel later.

Families, luggage and late arrivals

Travelling with children? UAE traffic rules require a child seat for children under four, and children aged ten or under, or shorter than 145 centimetres, may not sit in the front. When you book a drivoo transfer, add a child seat; the booking shows whether a car in your class has one, and we confirm it before your ride. Enter all your bags, including a stroller, so the car offered has room; a group or a family with many cases can choose drivoo Van when one fits. If you land late at night, a pre-booked car is already waiting when you come through, and you get a message with your chauffeur’s details. Our guide to child seats in UAE cars explains the rules in more detail.

Which option should you choose?

Take the metro if you travel light, land in the daytime at Terminal 1 or 3, and don’t mind a walk at the other end. Take a taxi if you are on your own with little luggage and happy to queue and pay what the meter shows. Book a chauffeur if you are with family or colleagues, carry several bags, need a child seat, land late, have a meeting to reach, or simply want the fare settled before you fly and someone waiting when you arrive. Whatever you choose, allow extra time at the evening peak. Read our DXB terminal meeting point guide before you travel, and see all Dubai Airport (DXB) transfers for other parts of the city.
